Historical overview
Malcesine boasts ancient origins dating back to Roman times, and even earlier to the Lombards. The Rocca (lit. Fortress) of Malcesine is believed to date back to the last centuries of the first millennium BC, although the castle itself was constructed by the Lombards in the middle of the first millennium AD. In 590, the castle was destroyed by the Franks, who then rebuilt it and used it to host King Pepin in 806. Designed to control and protect the town, the castle passed into the hands of the Scaligeri family in 1277 and was reinforced by Alberto I, along with the town walls. From 1351 onwards, under Mastino I, it became the seat of the Capitaniato del Lago (lit. the Lake Captaincy), and for this reason the keep was raised and the nearby cassero was built. Over the centuries, Malcesine came under the rule of both the Republic of Venice and later the Austrian Empire, always maintaining a strategic role thanks to its position on the lake. The Castello Scaligero (lit. Scaligeri Castle) dominates the town from above, while the historic centre below still retains its medieval structure.
City itinerary
The tour begins in Piazza Statuto (lit. Statute Square) and continues towards the Porto Nuovo (lit. the New Harbour), before turning right onto Via Capitaniato. Here, you will find the Renaissance Palazzo dei Capitani (lit. the Captains’ Palace), which served as the seat of the Capitaniato del Lago from 1504 to 1702. Once you reach the outer boundary of the walled village on Corso Garibaldi, turn left into Vicolo Porto Vecchio, which leads to an inlet bearing the same name: this area is also called Piazza Magenta (lit. Magenta Square). Go up Via Borre to Piazzetta Don Turazza (lit. Don Turazza Square). The buildings on the north side reflect the layout of the
walls that surrounded the oldest part of the city. The only remaining part of these walls is the Porta Siresina (lit. Siresina Gate) arch. Walk through it along Via Castello, turning left at Porta della Possa (lit. della Possa Gate) and continuing along Via Posterna until you reach the Castle gate. Enter the lower courtyard and, on the left, visit the Casermetta (lit. Small Barracks), built in 1622 and now home to the Museo di Storia Naturale (the Natural History Museum). A flight of steps leads to the gate opened by the Austrians. To the left of this is the powder magazine, dating back to 1863, which is now called Sala Goethe (lit. Goethe Room). In the second courtyard, located to the right, a Venetian-era ramp will lead you to the ravelin. Another ramp on the opposite side leads to the upper courtyard, where the pentagonal keep (dating back to 1131, except for the observatory) and the Scaligeri residence stand. The Scaligeri residence has been the seat of the Capitano del Lago (lit. the Captain of the Lake) since 1351. Once back on Via Posterna, turn right down the narrow street leading to the picturesque castle cove. Then, turn left onto Via Castello, which is overlooked by the imposing Porta del Soccorso (lit. Rescue Gate). Continue along Via delle Cerche until you reach the village’s eastern gate.
