Historical overview
Since Roman times, Pieve di Cadore has played a key political, administrative, religious and cultural role in the Cadore area due to its strategic geographical position. After the domination of the Lombards and Franks, a local organisation was formed in the 11th century, which became the basis for the future administrative structure of the Magnifica Comunità (the Magnificent Community). Thanks to its rich historical, artistic and environmental heritage, Pieve di Cadore is a city of art, with visible evidence of this in the 15th-century Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Cadore (lit. the Palace of the Magnificent Community of Cadore), which houses an archaeological museum, and the Chiesa arcidiaconale di S. Maria Nascente (lit. the archdeacon’s Church of the Nativity of St. Mary), which contains valuable artefacts. The historic centre is also home to many ancient residences, many of which border the beautiful Piazza Tiziano (lit. Tiziano Square), which features a statue of the great master painter. Tiziano’s birthplace, now a national monument, is also located in the historic centre, whose buildings bear witness to the changes made to traditional architecture by the economic wealth resulting from the Venetian rule. Another important feature is the modern defensive system dating from the late 19th century, consisting of the fortifications of Monte Ricco (Mount Ricco), Batteria Castello and Col Vaccher (Vaccher Hill). In the mid-20th century, Cadore experienced significant industrial development in the eyewear sector (don’t miss the dedicated museum).
City itinerary
The territory of Pieve di Cadore offers a variety of routes for both experienced and novice hikers.
PARCO ROCCOLO – SANT’ALIPIO (ROCCOLO PARK – SANT’ALIPIO)
From the centre of Pieve di Cadore, take Via XX Settembre and follow the flat, easy path alongside the playground towards a mixed forest of larches, beeches and firs. The walk takes about 10 minutes and leads to Bar Roccolo. From a terrace a little further down, which seems to be suspended in mid-air, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lago Centro Cadore (lit. Centro Cadore Lake), framed by the Marmarole, Montanel and Tudaio mountain ranges, and the Vedorcia forests.
I FORTI DI MONTERICCO (THE FORTS OF MONTERICCO)
From Pieve di Cadore’s Square, take the municipal road downhill towards Sottocastello. After 50 metres, turn left onto a road that leads up to the monument dedicated to Pietro Fortunato Calvi, a hero of the 1848 uprisings who was part of the Belfiore martyrs. You will then reach a fork in the road. If you go downhill, you will get to the cycle path near Pieve di Cadore’s cemetery, whereas if you continue uphill, you will reach your destination. As you go along, pass through a forest of majestic, centuries-old beech trees in an environmentally protected area. At the next fork in the road, turn right and follow the road until you reach the Fort of Monte Ricco.
SOTTOCASTELLO – DIGA (SOTTOCASTELLO – DAM)
From the centre of Pieve di Cadore, drive or take public transport down to the town of Sottocastello, where you can leave your car. If you want to shorten the walk, follow the signs for the lake and park at Bar Ai Campi instead. Follow the municipal road downhill, passing through a tunnel, until you reach the dam. Turn right here and, after a few hairpin bends and another tunnel, you will reach the base of the hydroelectric dam. Here, you can admire the impressive structure and its associated facilities.
FONTANA DEL SASS (SASS FOUNTAIN)
The name originates from the spring that once flowed from the rocks. It is situated on a plateau in a coniferous forest to the north of the town of Tai. From Piazzale Dolomiti (lit. Dolomites Square), head uphill, keeping the ice rink on your right. The road, which is suitable for vehicles, climbs up to Monte Zucco (Mount Zucco), passing through the woods. The fountain is located on a plateau with picnic areas. About 100 metres further up, the 19th-century fortification of Col Vaccher is on your right. Continue climbing until you reach the top of Monte Zucco, where you can enjoy a 360° view.
CASCATE DEL PISSANDRO (THE PISSANDRO WATERFALLS)
From the village of Nebbiù, climb up Via XXIV Maggio and Via San Dionisio to the Chiesa di San Dionisio (lit. Church of St. Dionysius). Continue along the paved road for another 100 metres or so, then take the signposted path to the waterfalls. The path is easy and the slope is gentle.
