Historical overview
Soave is a medieval town with a rich historical heritage, located at the foot of the Lessini Mountains and crossed by the Tramigna River. The first settlements date back to prehistoric times, while the name originates from the Lombards, more specifically from the Swabian tribe (named Suaves). The volcanic origin of the area led to the formation of hills and to the development of viticulture. Important settlements already existed in Roman times, as proven by epigraphs and necropolises. Its 10th-century castle, located on Monte Tenda, was at the centre of numerous dominions, from the Sambonifacio to the Dalla Scala families, before finally coming under the rule of the Republic of Venice, which granted it centuries of peace. Restored by the Camuzzoni family between 1889 and 1892, the castle is now a symbol of the city. Soave boasts a remarkable architectural heritage, including historic buildings, Romanesque and Gothic churches, and the Santuario di Santa Maria della Bassanella (lit. Sanctuary of St. Mary of the Bassanella). It is a place where history, art, and landscape coexist harmoniously.
