Historical overview

In medieval times, Noale was a fortified village built by the noble Tempesta family, which operated as administrators of the bishop of Treviso’s assets. The city was built on the Marzenego River, at the crossroads of ancient roads that still connect Treviso to Padua and Mestre to Camposampiero. Its castle, which is surrounded by ramparts and moats, and which features two fortified masonry gates, dates back to the 12th century. The construction of the fortress in its current form began in 1245 under Ezzelino da Romano and was completed by the Tempesta family after his death.

City itinerary

From Piazza XX Settembre (lit. 20th September Square), the former location of the weekly market, you can see Noale’s unique defensive system featuring an ‘island’ layout: the protective structures are based on moats drawing water from the Marzenego river, and two gates closing off the central road — one leading to Mestre and the other to Camposampiero. Continue to the intersection known as ‘Quattrostrade’ (lit. ‘Four Streets’), from which you can then access the city: here you will find the 16th-century ‘Colonna della Pace’ (lit. Column of Peace), a sculpture by Venetian Paolo Pino Veneziano. Enter through Porta dell’Orologio (lit. Clock Gate), which is dominated by an elegant tower. The vast Piazza Castello (lit. the Castle Square), along with the 15th-century Parrocchiale dei SS. Felice e Fortunato (lit. the Parish Church of Sts. Felix and Fortunato), are lined with porticoed houses adorned with wall friezes and small palaces in the typical Treviso style. On the opposite side of the square stands the Torre delle Campane (lit. the Bell Tower), marking the boundary of the town in the direction of Camposampiero. To the left of the tower is the charming and romantic Via delle Rimembranze, which is flanked by two moats forming the town’s double water defences. These run all the way around the Rocca dei Tempesta (lit. the Tempesta Fortress), which can be reached from the square via a small bridge. The castle’s remains bear witness to its ancient and powerful past, with high walls protected by three external towers. Isolated by a branch of the Marzenego River, it was once protected by a drawbridge.

At weekends, both the Palazzo della Loggia (lit. the Loggia Palace) and the Torre delle Campane host exhibitions and displays.
