Historical overview

Rivoli Veronese’s unique geographical position at the mouth of the Adige River valley has ensured this town’s importance in controlling land and river transport. The oldest archaeological remains prove that the first settlements date back to the Neolithic period. But it was not until the late Middle Ages, around 1100 with Frederick Barbarossa, that a real settlement in the form of a fortified military structure emerged. On January 14, 1797, Rivoli was once again the scene of battle when Napoleon’s troops, engaged in the Italian campaign, managed to turn the tide and win a bloody battle. Moreover, further wars occurred in the same location during the War of Independence. In the summer of 1848, several divisions of the Piedmontese army clashed victoriously with the Austrian troops of Marshal Radetzky. The forts, especially Forte Wohlgemuth (lit. Fort Wohlgemuth), still bear witness to Rivoli Veronese history.

City itinerary

The itinerary includes a visit to Monte Rocca (lit. Mount Rocca), which features medieval ruins dating back to the 12th century. Park at the beginning of the trail, which is located south of the city. The ruins are located on a high spur that forces the Adige River into a double bend. Together with the walls on the opposite bank, the river is then forced into a deep rocky gorge known as the Chiusa. Over time, the area has been fortified up to the positions that dominate the sides of the Val d’Adige. On this hill, known as Monte Rocca, Neolithic finds from the 6th millennium BC have recently been discovered. Despite the difficulty of the trail, the beauty of the landscape overlooking the Adige River valley and the morainic amphitheater (a series of semi-circular hills to the west of Rivoli) is well worth the effort.

North of the city, you can climb the winding military road to reach Forte Wohlgemuth, a perfectly cylindrical fort. It is positioned on Monte Castello (lit. Mount of the Castle), whose walls drop steeply to the Adige River. This location dominates the Brenner Pass and the connections to Lake Garda. Built in 1854 at the behest of Field Marshal Radetzky, it was constructed alongside the other forts on the opposite side of the valley, which are: Tagliata Stradale of which only ruins remain ; Forte Mollinary (lit. Fort Mollinary) of which only ruins remain ; and Forte Hlavaty (lit. Fort Hlavaty). In 1884, Forte Wohlgemuth was modified with the addition of a new casemated front and a lower battery to the north, and then completed with the Caserma Massena (lit. the Massena Barracks). Further north, the remains of the monument that Napoleon dedicated to his fallen soldiers is worth visiting.
