Historical overview
Located in the Treviso plain, Roncade has been inhabited since Neolithic times, as evidenced by flint tools and burials dating back to the 4th-3rd millennium BC. During the Roman era, the town flourished due to its proximity to Altino and to the Claudia Augusta Altinate and Annia roads, which transformed it into a major commercial centre. In the 10th century, it became a feud of the Counts of Collalto, Lombard nobles responsible for encouraging agricultural settlements and building fortifications in Biancade and Musestre. Under the Venetian Republic, the local aristocracy and patrician villas (such as the Guidotti, Badoer and Morosini Villas) flourished, partly thanks to the construction of the Castello di Roncade (lit. the Castle of Roncade) in the 16th century, following the marriage of Agnesina Badoer to Girolamo Giustinian. After the Napoleonic and Austrian eras, Roncade became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. In this agricultural area, craft and industrial activities developed, among them the Menon factories, which produced the first Italian car. After the Second World War, the area maintained its typical Venetian farming and craft/industrial traditions.
City itinerary
In the historic centre of Roncade stands the Castello di Roncade, also known as Villa Giustinian or Villa Ciani Bassetti. Built on the site of an ancient fortress belonging to the Counts of Collalto, the castle was constructed in the 16th century by Girolamo Giustinian. While retaining its defensive features, it was later converted into an elegant noble residence and is now home to businesses associated with winemaking and hospitality. Opposite the castle, near the city’s gardens, stands the Monumento ai Caduti (lit. the War Memorial), which was erected in 1924 and designed by the sculptor Libero Andreotti. This bronze sculpture depicts the goddess Eos taking her son Memnon to heaven, in memory of those who died in war. Continuing along Via Giovanni XXIII, you will come to the Monumento agli Artiglieri (lit. the Monument to the Artillerymen), which pays tribute to fallen soldiers of this branch of the army. Further along is the statue of Riccardo Selvatico, who lived in Roncade for many years until his death, in 1901, after participating in a tumultuous city council meeting in Venice: a poet and playwright, he was mayor of Venice and responsible for many initiatives, including the construction of social housing and, most notably, the creation of Venice’s Biennale, an institution launched in 1895 that still enjoys international prestige today. As you continue along the banks of the Musestre river, you will find traces of the ancient laundresses and of the lives of the so-called barcaroli: these figures were once essential for transporting goods and washing fabrics, shaping the daily life of the village. Crossing the centre of Roncade, you will reach the municipal library garden, where Alessio Tasca’s sculpture dedicated to Carlo Menon is located. Menon was an inventor and entrepreneur who designed the first Italian car, becoming a symbol of Roncade’s mechanical and industrial development.
