Historical overview
Between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, the territory that is now known as Valeggio sul Mincio was inhabited by the Cisalpine Gauls, who established a settlement in the Mincio River valley where, many centuries later, also its fraction Borghetto would be founded. Its location on the Mincio River made it a key location for controlling the surrounding territory. During the Roman era, the town was well connected to the Postumia, Gallica and Claudia Augusta roads. The Lombards first established an early settlement on the riverbanks and cultivated their fertile hills. During the medieval period, from the end of the 1st millennium to the beginning of the next one, this area was annexed to the German imperial crown. It was later fortified by the construction of the Castello Scaligero (the Scaligeri Castle) in the 13th century and by the majestic Visconti Bridge in 1393, which was commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti for military and defensive purposes. In the modern era, though, the Mincio River valley witnessed many wars, including the three Italian Risorgimento Wars, which determined Italy’s fate in these very places.
City itinerary
From the car park in Piazza San Rocco (lit. St. Rocco Square), you can reach the Castello Scaligero, which is built on Mount Ogheri. This complex is divided into three sections, one of which is a private villa and is not open to the public. Enter the north courtyard, whose enclosure dates back to 1284. It is dominated by a keep, which was reinforced by Cansignorio, and is defended by two towers. At the north-eastern corner is a semi-circular tower which opens out onto the gorge and is believed to predate the work of the Scaligeri family. The intermediate courtyard and the southern enclosure (the drill ground) date back to the construction of the Serraglio, a walled stretch which connected the Castle to the fortified settlement of Borghetto before continuing eastwards for around 16 kilometres; the ruins of the Castelletto (lit. Small Castle), in the locality of Gherla, are all that remain of this structure. Descending through the Giardini Comunali (lit. the Municipal Gardens) from the Castle, you will reach the Ponte Visconteo (the Visconti Bridge), which was once fortified with curtain walls and three towers. This may originally have been connected to the Castle above by walls. Continue on to Borghetto, a small settlement on the banks of the Mincio River defended by walls, a part of which is still preserved. It is also possible to reach Borghetto by car from the Castle, by parking to the east of the village. The Fortilizio (lit. the Fortalice) was probably constructed around the same time as the Serraglio, which ended here. Access it via the northern gate and head towards the Mincio’s right bank to admire the Ponte Visconteo, which is still impressive despite being badly damaged.
